What is FiveM? Download, install, and how it works

FiveM is a free mod for GTA V on PC that lets you play on servers run by other players instead of Rockstar's. Almost all of them are roleplay servers, which is where GTA RP comes from.

Short answer
FiveM is the multiplayer platform behind GTA RP. It's free, PC only, made by Cfx.re (owned by Rockstar since 2023), and works with any legal PC copy of GTA V. Right now 81,952 people are playing on 4,693 FiveM servers.

How to download and install FiveM

About ten minutes if GTA V is already installed.

  1. 1Install GTA V on PCSteam, Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic. Launch it once and let it finish updating.
  2. 2Download FiveMGet the installer from fivem.net, the official site. Ignore “FiveM download” links anywhere else; they are often malware.
  3. 3Run the installerIt installs to %localappdata%\FiveM by default, finds your GTA V install, and downloads its own files on first launch.
  4. 4Pick a serverUse the in-game browser or the ranked list here, then press connect.

How FiveM works

FiveM loads GTA V without its online mode and connects you to a server run by a community instead. Each server can change almost everything: jobs, cars, maps, inventory, money, rules. That is why two GTA RP servers can feel like different games.

The servers are listed publicly by Cfx.re. That public list is what rplist ranks, every ten minutes, by players online.

Questions

Is FiveM free?
Yes. FiveM itself is free. You need a legal copy of GTA V on PC. Some servers sell queue priority or cosmetics; you never have to pay to play.
Is FiveM on Steam?
No. FiveM is a separate download from fivem.net. It works with the Steam copy of GTA V, and with the Rockstar Games Launcher and Epic copies.
Did Rockstar buy FiveM?
Yes. Rockstar Games acquired Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, in 2023. FiveM is an official, allowed way to play GTA V multiplayer on custom servers.
Can I get banned from GTA Online for using FiveM?
FiveM runs separately from GTA Online and doesn't touch your Rockstar online account. Cheating on FiveM servers gets you banned from FiveM, not from the base game.
Does FiveM work on PS5 or Xbox?
No. FiveM is PC only. There is no way to join FiveM roleplay servers from a console.
What's the difference between FiveM and GTA Online?
GTA Online runs on Rockstar's servers with Rockstar's rules. FiveM servers are run by communities, each with its own map changes, jobs, rules and economy. Most are roleplay.
