Download FiveM the right one, from the official site

FiveM is the free multiplayer mod behind GTA roleplay. It only comes from fivem.net and needs your own copy of GTA V on a Windows PC. There are two downloads now; here's which one you want, how to install it, and what to do once it's running.

Short answer
Go to fivem.net and press Download FiveM for FiveM.exe. That's the version for GTA V Legacy, where 99.8% of roleplay players are. Run it, point it at GTA V, let it update its game data, and sign in. Only pick FiveM for GTA V Enhanced if the server you want needs it.

Servers with players on the Cfx.re list, split by the client they need. FiveM for GTA V Enhanced opened as early access in July 2026 and has its own server list.

What you need

GTA V on a Windows PC. Steam, Epic Games, the Rockstar Games Launcher, or a Microsoft Store / Game Pass copy of GTA V Legacy. Launch it once so it finishes installing. Pirated copies don't work.

A Rockstar account, signed in. FiveM needs the Rockstar Games Launcher running and signed in, and asks you to sign in with a free Cfx.re account on first launch.

Not a console. There's no FiveM for PlayStation or Xbox. More on GTA RP and consoles.

From download to your first server

Most of the wait is FiveM updating its game data on first launch, then the server's own files on your first join.
  1. 1Download from fivem.netType the address yourself and press Download FiveM. You get FiveM.exe; downloading means accepting Rockstar's Creator Platform License Agreement.
  2. 2Run FiveM.exeIt installs itself into %localappdata%\FiveM (or into its own folder, if that folder is empty) and adds a Start menu shortcut.
  3. 3Point it at GTA VOn first launch, select GTA5.exe in your GTA V folder. In Steam: right-click GTA V → Manage → Browse local files.
  4. 4Update and sign inSay Yes when it says local game data needs updating; it can take several minutes. Then accept the terms, press Sign in with Cfx and authorize in your browser.
  5. 5Pick a serverUse the in-game browser, or the live ranking here and press Join via FiveM on any server page.
  6. 6ConnectYour first join downloads the server's own files, often hundreds of megabytes on a big city. You can also press F8 and type connect cfx.re/join/CODE.

Download it safely

Get FiveM only from fivem.net, or the links in Cfx.re's own install guide. Re-hosted copies on download sites add nothing and you can't tell what's been changed. Skip anything promising mod menus, unlocks or a “cracked” FiveM: there's nothing to crack, and cheat software gets your account banned from every server. How FiveM bans work.

If it doesn't start

“Could not find game executable”: FiveM lost track of GTA V. Cfx.re's fix is to set the GTA V folder on the IVPATH= line of %localappdata%\FiveM\FiveM.app\CitizenFX.ini.

FiveM disappears after installing: your antivirus removed it. Add an exception for the FiveM folder and run FiveM.exe again.

Error 127: don't run the Rockstar Games Launcher as administrator.

Questions

Is FiveM free?
FiveM itself costs nothing to download or play. You need your own legal copy of GTA V on PC; pirated copies don't work.
FiveM or FiveM for GTA V Enhanced?
Regular FiveM, unless a server you want says Enhanced. Regular FiveM needs GTA V Legacy and is where almost every roleplay server is. The Enhanced client is in early access, needs GTA V Enhanced and has its own, much smaller server list.
Which copies of GTA V work?
Steam, Epic Games, the Rockstar Games Launcher and, since April 2025, Microsoft Store and Game Pass copies of GTA V Legacy. Buying GTA V Enhanced on Steam also gives you GTA V Legacy.
Do I need a Rockstar account?
Yes. Cfx.re says FiveM needs the Rockstar Games Launcher running and signed in. On first launch FiveM also asks you to sign in with a Cfx.re account in your browser.
Will FiveM get me banned from GTA Online?
No. fivem.net says FiveM doesn't modify your game files and you can switch between GTA Online and FiveM without getting banned. Cheat software inside FiveM is what gets accounts banned.
Can I play FiveM on Mac, Linux, Steam Deck or console?
Not properly. Cfx.re says the client can't run on Linux, and under Wine or Proton (Steam Deck included) it runs in an insecure mode most servers refuse. There's no Mac or console version.
